It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever usurps the right of a Muslim unjustly, when he meets Allah Almighty, He will be angry with him. Meanwhile, Sayyiduna Ash’ath bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) came and asked the people what Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) had narrated to them. The people narrated what he had said. Sayyiduna Ash’ath (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This incident happened with me. I had a dispute over a well with my cousin. The well was mine, but he refused to give it to me. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: Ash’ath, do you have any evidence that this well is yours? Otherwise, your opponent will take an oath. I said: O Messenger of Allah! What can I do about his oath? If you decide in the light of his oath, he will take the well, because my opponent is a sinful man. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever seizes the wealth of a Muslim unjustly will meet Allah Almighty in such a state that He will be angry with him. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: {اِنَّ الَّذِیْنَیَشْتَرُوْنَ بِعَہْدِ اللّٰہِ وَاَیْمَانِہِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِیْلًا اُولٰیِکَ لَا خَلَاقَ لَـہُمْ فِی الْاٰخِرَۃِ وَلَا یُکَلِّمُھُمُ اللّٰہُ وَلَا یَنْظُرُ اِلَیْہِمْیَوْمَ الْقِیٰمَۃِ وَلَا یُزَکِّیْہِمْ وَلَھُمْ عَذَابٌ اَلِیْمٌ۔} … Indeed, those who exchange Allah’s covenant and their oaths for a small price, they will have no share in the Hereafter, and Allah will neither speak to them nor look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and for them is a painful punishment. (Surah Aal-e-Imran: 77)
(Second Chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: Whoever swears a false oath and thereby claims someone’s property, while he is a sinner in this, then he will meet Allah the Exalted in such a state that Allah will be angry with him. This verse confirms this incident: {اِنَّ الَّذِیْنَیَشْتَرُوْنَ بِعَہْدِ اللّٰہِ وَاَیْمَانِہِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِیْلًا اُولٰیِکَ لَا خَلَاقَ لَھُمْ فِی الْاٰخِرَۃِ وَلَا یُکَلِّمُھُمُ اللّٰہُ وَلَا یَنْظُرُ اِلَیْہِمْیَوْمَ الْقِیٰمَۃِ وَلَا یُزَکِّیْہِمْ وَلَھُمْ عَذَابٌ اَلِیْمٌ۔} … Indeed, those who exchange Allah’s covenant and their oaths for a small price, they will have no share in the Hereafter, and Allah will neither speak to them nor look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and for them is a painful punishment. (Surah Aal-e-Imran: 77) When Sayyiduna Ash’ath (may Allah be pleased with him) came, he was reciting this verse and saying that this verse was revealed about him. A man claimed that one of my wells belonged to him, so we both brought our dispute to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: Do you have two witnesses? Otherwise, his oath will be accepted. I said: His oath is the oath of a sinner. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever swears a false oath and seizes wealth, he will meet Allah the Exalted in such a state that Allah will be angry with him.
