It is narrated from Umayyah that he asked Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about these verses: {إِنْتُبْدُوْامَافِیأَنْفُسِکُمْأَوْتُخْفُوْہُیُحَاسِبْکُمْبِہِاللّٰہُ} and {مَنْیَعْمَلْسُوئً ا یُجْزَبِہِ} (Whoever does an evil deed will be recompensed for it). Sayyida (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Since the time I asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) about them, no one has asked me about them until now. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: O Aisha! Allah continues to hold the servant accountable through those afflictions that keep befalling the servant, such as: fever occurs, calamity comes, a thorn pricks, even to the extent that the item which the servant keeps in his sleeve, then becomes distressed upon not finding it, and then finds it in his own side or armpit. (This series of illnesses and troubles continues) until the believer becomes purified from his sins just as a red gold nugget becomes pure after coming out of the furnace.
