Hadith 8512

Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to lead the Zuhr prayer at midday, and this prayer was the hardest upon the Companions. Then this verse was revealed: {حَافِظُوْا عَلَی الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلٰاۃِ الْوُسْطٰی} … Guard strictly the prayers, especially the best prayer. Then Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Because there are two prayers before it and two prayers after it.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of "Salat al-Wusta" is the most virtuous prayer. From this hadith, it is not clearly evident that by "al-salat al-wusta" is meant the Zuhr prayer, because it is possible that the Zuhr prayer is included in the general command of "Hafizoo 'ala al-salawat" (Guard strictly the prayers). In any case, the opinion of Sayyiduna Zayd radi Allahu anhu was that what is meant by this is the Zuhr prayer, but in other marfu' narrations, it has been clarified that what is meant is the Asr prayer. In this chapter, the following verse will be used frequently, so memorize it along with its translation: {حَافِظُوْا عَلَی الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاۃِ الْوُسْطٰی وَقُومُوْا لِلّٰہِ قَانِتِینَ} … Guard strictly the prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah in obedience. (Surah al-Baqarah: 238)
