Hadith 8494

عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْوَ بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ سِتَّةَ عَشَرَ شَهْرًا أَوْ سَبْعَةَ عَشَرَ شَهْرًا ثُمَّ وُجِّهَ إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ وَكَانَ يُحِبُّ ذَلِكَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ {قَدْ نَرَى تَقَلُّبَ وَجْهِكَ فِي السَّمَاءِ فَلَنُوَلِّيَنَّكَ قِبْلَةً تَرْضَاهَا فَوَلِّ وَجْهَكَ شَطْرَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ} الْآيَةَ قَالَ فَمَرَّ رَجُلٌ صَلَّى مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْعَصْرَ عَلَى قَوْمٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ وَهُمْ رُكُوعٌ فِي صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ نَحْوَ بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ فَقَالَ هُوَ يَشْهَدُ أَنَّهُ صَلَّى مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَّهُ قَدْ وُجِّهَ إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ قَالَ فَانْحَرَفُوا وَهُمْ رُكُوعٌ فِي صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ
Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed facing Bayt al-Maqdis for sixteen or seventeen months. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) was directed towards the Ka‘bah, and this was also the qiblah he preferred. So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: {قَدْ نَرٰی تَقَلُّبَ وَجْہِکَ فِی السَّمَائِ فَلَنُوَلِّیَنَّکَ قِبْلَۃً تَرْضَاہَا فَوَلِّ وَجْہَکَ شَطْرَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ} … “Indeed, We see the turning of your face towards the heaven; surely We shall turn you to a qiblah which you shall like. So turn your face towards al-Masjid al-Haram.” A man who had performed the ‘Asr prayer with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a group of the Ansar while they were in the state of bowing (ruku‘). He said: “I bear witness that I have prayed with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he has been commanded to face the Ka‘bah.” So they turned towards the Ka‘bah at that very moment while they were in the state of bowing.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This was the tribe of Banu Harithah, and this very mosque came to be known as the Mosque of the Two Qiblahs (Masjid Qiblatayn). By gathering all the narrations, it becomes clear that the command for the change of Qiblah was revealed at the time of the Zuhr (noon) prayer. The first prayer that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed facing the Ka‘bah was Zuhr. Those who prayed with the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam conveyed this information to other mosques. In the Mosque of the Two Qiblahs, this information reached during the ‘Asr (afternoon) prayer on the same day, and the people of the Mosque of Quba learned of the change of Qiblah during the Fajr (dawn) prayer the next day.

The command for the change of Qiblah was revealed at the time of the Zuhr prayer: There is a difference of opinion regarding in which mosque the command for the change of Qiblah was revealed. Some mention the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid Nabawi), while other scholars mention the mosque of Banu Salamah. The second opinion is correct. The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had gone to the neighborhood of Banu Salamah, and there the time for prayer arrived. While he was leading the prayer, the command for the change of Qiblah was revealed. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam complied with the command during the prayer itself, and this was the Zuhr prayer. For this reason, the mosque of Banu Salamah is called the Mosque of the Two Qiblahs (Masjid Qiblatayn). In the neighborhood of Banu Harithah, the news reached during the ‘Asr prayer, so they too changed the Qiblah during the prayer itself. In the Mosque of Quba, the information arrived during the Fajr prayer, so they also changed the Qiblah in that very state.
