Hadith 8492

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ لَمَّا حُوِّلَتِ الْقِبْلَةُ قَالَ أُنَاسٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَصْحَابُنَا الَّذِينَ مَاتُوا وَهُمْ يُصَلُّونَ إِلَى بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ {وَمَا كَانَ اللَّهُ لِيُضِيعَ إِيمَانَكُمْ}
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Qiblah was changed, some people said: O Messenger of Allah! What will happen to our companions who used to pray facing Bayt al-Maqdis and then died in that state? Allah Almighty revealed this verse: {وَمَا کَانَ اللّٰہُ لِیُضِیْعَ اِیْمَانَکُمْ} … Allah Almighty is not one to waste your prayers.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … When the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam migrated from Makkah Mukarramah to Madinah Munawwarah, he performed prayers for sixteen or seventeen months facing towards Bayt al-Maqdis, although his desire was to perform prayers facing towards the Ka‘bah. Eventually, when this wish of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was fulfilled, a doubt arose in the minds of some Companions that perhaps the prayers performed previously would be wasted or their reward would not be granted. Allah Ta‘ala clarified that those prayers would not be wasted, because they too were performed in accordance with the command of Allah and His Messenger. In this verse, prayer (salah) has been referred to as faith (iman), which makes it clear that without prayer, faith has no standing.
