Hadith 8488

عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ مُقْبِلًا مِنْ مَكَّةَ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ حَيْثُ تَوَجَّهَتْ بِهِ وَفِيهِ نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {فَأَيْنَمَا تُوَلُّوا فَثَمَّ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ}
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was performing prayer on his mount while he was traveling from Makkah Mukarramah to Madinah Munawwarah. The mount would turn in whichever direction it wished. Regarding this, the following verse was revealed: {فَاَیْنَمَا تُوَلُّوْا فَثَمَّ وَجْہُ اللّٰہِ} … Wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah. (Surah Al-Baqarah: 115)

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Various occasions of revelation (shan-e-nuzul) are mentioned for this verse. One of them is that the reason for its revelation is the permission to perform voluntary (nafl) prayers while traveling on a mount, such that one may pray in whatever direction the mount is facing. Furthermore, two additional reasons for revelation are as follows: After the migration (hijrah), when Muslims used to pray facing Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem), the Muslims felt sorrow over this. At that time, this verse was revealed. When the command was given to turn from Bayt al-Maqdis towards the Ka‘bah, the Jews began to say various things; in response to them, this verse was revealed. It sometimes happens that several reasons are combined, and a single verse is revealed to address all of them.
