Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty said: {ادْخُلُواالْبَابَسُجَّدًا} … (Enter through the gate while prostrating) but those people entered dragging themselves in the opposite manner, and it was said to them: {وَقُوْلُواحِطَّۃٌ} … (And say: Forgive us) but they changed the command and said: A grain of wheat in my hair.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The complete verse is: {وَاِذْقُلْنَاادْخُلُوْاھٰذِہِالْقَرْیَۃَفَکُلُوْامِنْہَاحَیْثُشِئْتُمْرَغَدًاوَّادْخُلُواالْبَابَسُجَّدًاوَّقُوْلُوْاحِطَّۃٌنَّغْفِرْلَکُمْخَطٰیٰکُمْوَسَنَزِیْدُالْمُحْسِنِیْنَ۔} … And when We said, "Enter this town, and eat from it freely wherever you wish, and enter the gate prostrating and say, 'Relieve us of our burdens,' We will forgive your sins for you, and We will increase the reward for the doers of good." (Surah al-Baqarah: 58)
When the Children of Israel, after spending forty years in the wilderness (Tih), set out with Yusha‘ bin Nun (alayhis salam), and Allah Ta‘ala granted them the conquest of Bayt al-Maqdis, and even the sun was stopped for the completion of this conquest, at that time they were told to enter the gate prostrating and to say, "O Allah! Forgive us," so that the expression of gratitude for the conquest would be manifest. However, as they entered, they adopted a mocking attitude—this was the state of the Jews' disobedience to commands.
