Hadith 8471

It is narrated from Abu Tamimah Hajimi, who reports from the back seat of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), that he was sitting behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on his mount. Suddenly, when the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mount slipped, he said: “May the devil be ruined.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do not say this. In this way, he considers himself great, so much so that he swells with joy until he becomes as big as a mountain and says, ‘I made him fall by my strength.’ But when you say ‘Bismillah’ (In the name of Allah), he becomes small, until he is as little as a fly.”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is understood that at the time of falling, slipping, stumbling, or receiving any injury, one should say "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah), and at such moments, one should not curse Shaytan. The subject of the mentioned hadith is also this: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((If you had said: Bismillah, the angels would have carried you away while the people were looking at you.)) He said this to Talhah when his fingers were cut and he said: "Hass" (an exclamation of pain). This has been narrated from Jabir, Anas radi Allahu anhuma, and Ibn Shihab in mursal form. If you had said "Bismillah," the angels would have carried you away while the people were looking at you. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said this to our master Talhah radi Allahu anhu at the time when he had said "Haye" (an exclamation of pain) due to some suffering. This hadith is narrated in mursal form from our master Jabir, our master Anas radi Allahu anhuma, and Ibn Shihab. (It is cited by Al-Suyuti in Al-Jami' Al-Kabir from the narration of Al-Nasa'i and Al-Tabarani, Sahihah: 2796)

It is understood that upon sudden pain, instead of uttering meaningless words like "haye," "haye meri maye," "oho," or "o tera bhala," one should say "Bismillah," for example, when getting wounded, falling down, or suddenly applying the brakes of a car to avoid an accident, etc.
