Hadith 8416

عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيْمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُنْزِلَ الْقُرْآنُ سَبْعَةَ أَحْرُفٍ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا
(Second chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The Noble Qur’an was revealed in seven modes of recitation, therefore, instead of ‘Aleeman Hakeeman’ it can be recited as ‘Ghafooran Raheeman’.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Allamah Sindhi said: The meaning of the second part of this hadith is that it is permissible to recite "Ghafuran Rahiman" (Most Forgiving, Most Merciful) in place of "Aliman Hakiman" (All-Knowing, All-Wise), or vice versa. And Allah knows best. The wording of the narration from Tabari and Ibn Abd al-Barr is as follows: The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((Indeed, this Qur’an has been revealed upon seven modes (ahruf), so recite it in whichever mode you find easy, and there is no harm in that. However, do not conclude a mention of mercy with punishment, nor a mention of punishment with mercy.)) … Indeed, the Qur’an was revealed in seven types of dialects, so you may recite it in any dialect; there will be no harm in that. However, take care that you do not end a mention of mercy with punishment, nor a mention of punishment with mercy.
