It is narrated from Sayyiduna Aws bin Huzayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I was present in that delegation which came from the Banu Malik tribe of Thaqif to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and accepted Islam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) accommodated us in a tent. When he would go from his house to the mosque, he would pass by us. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the Isha prayer, he would come to us and talk with us for a long time, mentioning the complaints of the Quraysh and the people of Makkah, and would say: Now there is no equality, the time has changed. In Makkah, we were scattered and weak, and when we were expelled from Makkah towards Madinah Munawwarah, the drum of war was beaten against us and also in our favor (meaning the contest was equal). One night, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come to us; a long time passed after Isha. Then when he came, we said: O Messenger of Allah! What was the reason you did not come to us? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: My portion of the Qur’an (was left), so it overcame me and I resolved not to come out until I completed it. When morning came, we asked the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): How do you divide the Qur’an and make portions of it? They said: We divide the Qur’an in this way: three surahs, five surahs, seven surahs, nine surahs, eleven surahs, thirteen surahs, and from Surah Qaf to the end is the detailed portion. In this way, the completion of the Qur’an is achieved.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … By specifying seven portions (ahzab), it is meant that the noble Companions (Sahabah) used to complete the recitation of the Qur’an within seven days. The details of these seven portions are as follows: Three surahs: from Surah al-Baqarah to Surah al-Nisa Five surahs: from Surah al-Ma’idah to Surah al-Tawbah Seven surahs: from Surah Yunus to Surah al-Nahl Nine surahs: from Surah al-Isra to Surah al-Furqan Eleven surahs: from Surah al-Shu’ara to Surah Ya-Sin Thirteen surahs: from Surah al-Saffat to Surah al-Hujurat After that, from Surah Qaf to the end of the Qur’an, this portion is called Mufassal.
The division of the Qur’an into seven sections (manzil) has been determined in this manner. This is a good and moderate arrangement for completing the Qur’an in seven days. For completing it in a month, the Qur’an has been divided into thirty parts (juz’). The reciter may also determine a lesser or greater amount than this. In any case, the Qur’an should be completed at least once in forty days, because the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) initially specified forty days for Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Amr (radi Allahu anhu). Although this narration is weak, it is permissible to specify an amount for recitation, remembrances (adhkar), and litanies (awrad), as is understood from the hadith in the next chapter.
