It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite a verse mentioning mercy, he would ask Allah for it; when he would pass by a verse mentioning punishment, he would seek refuge; and when he would pass by a verse in which Allah’s sanctity was declared, he would glorify Him.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would recite (the Qur’an) with such attention that, as much as possible, he would also fulfill the requirements of the verses. On this subject, only this hadith is authentic: that upon verses mentioning mercy, punishment, and glorification (tasbih), the prescribed supplication should be made. The follower (muqtadi) should remain silent and not make these supplications during the recitation of the imam, because during the recitation, there is a general command for the follower to remain silent, except for Surah al-Fatihah. The imam and the individual praying alone (munfarid) should act upon this sunnah.
