Hadith 8366

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that mention was made before her of those people who recite the Holy Qur’an once or twice in a single night. She said about them: Their recitation is like not reciting at all. I used to spend the whole night in prayer with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he would recite Surah Al-Baqarah, Surah Aal-e-Imran, and Surah An-Nisa, and whenever he recited a verse about fear, he would supplicate to Allah Almighty and seek refuge, and if he passed by a verse of glad tidings, he would supplicate to Allah Almighty and humbly request before Him.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This hadith has been narrated through various chains; two chains and their texts are presented below for your consideration: Ibn Abi Mulaykah says: Nafi‘ said: I think it was Hafsah (radi Allahu anha) that she was asked about the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). She said: "You are not able to do it." He said: So it was said to her: "Inform us about it." He said: So she recited in a manner in which she paused and recited slowly. Abu ‘Amir said: Nafi‘ said: Ibn Abi Mulaykah described it to us: {اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰہِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِیْنَ} then she paused, {اَلرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ}, then she paused, {مَالِکِ یَوْمِ الدَّیِْن}.

One of the wives of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), most likely it was Sayyidah Hafsah (radi Allahu anha), relates that she was asked about the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). She said: "You are not able to do it." Someone said to her: "At least tell us about it." In response, she recited and in it, she recited with pauses. Ibn Abi Mulaykah described it as follows: She recited {اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰہِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِیْنَ}, then paused, then recited {اَلرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ} and paused at it, then recited {مَالِکِ یَوْمِ الدَّیِْن}.

It is narrated from Ibn Abi Mulaykah that Sayyidah Umm Salamah (radi Allahu anha) was asked about the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). She said: "He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to recite every verse with pauses:" {بِسْمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ۔ اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰہِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِیْنَ۔ اَلرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ۔ مَالِکِ یَوْمِ الدَّیِْن}. (Musnad Ahmad: 26583, Abu Dawud: 4001, Tirmidhi: 2927)

Summary of the discussion is that during the recitation of the Noble Qur’an, one should pause at every verse and also be mindful of reciting with deliberation. Alas! Most Muslims, when it comes to the recitation of the Qur’an, pay attention to quantity, not quality, especially in Tarawih and during Ramadan. Their mindset is to complete the Qur’an as quickly as possible by reciting as many sections as they can. To such people, it is advised that first and foremost, bring beauty to your action according to the standard, recite with tartil (measured recitation), and pause at every verse. If you desire greater quantity, then devote more time.
