عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا أَذِنَ اللَّهُ لِشَيْءٍ مَا أَذِنَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَتَغَنَّى بِالْقُرْآنِ زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ فِيمَا يَجْهَرُ بِهِ
Syedna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah Almighty has never listened to anything as attentively as He listens to the voice of His Prophet when he recites the Qur'an aloud.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning stated by the narrator Waki‘ is not correct; its correct meaning is to recite the Noble Qur’an in a beautiful voice.
(He is not from us who does not suffice himself with the Qur’an along with (other things). This meaning of the hadith is also correct. Imam Bukhari, by establishing a chapter heading for this very hadith under discussion, has presented this verse of the Qur’an: {اَوَ لَمْ یَکْفِہِمْ اَنَّآ اَنْزَلْنَا عَلَیْکَ الْکِتٰبَ یُتْلٰی عَلَیْہِمْ } (Al-‘Ankabut: 51) “Is it not sufficient for them that We have sent down to you the Book which is recited to them?” That is, this Book makes one independent from the previous revealed books and makes one indifferent to frivolous poetry and writings. (Bukhari, Chapter: Whoever does not suffice himself with the Qur’an, before Hadith: 5022) It becomes clear that both meanings of the hadith are correct; this is one of the perfections of the Prophetic hadith.) Undoubtedly, the beauty of the Noble Qur’an is enhanced by a beautiful voice, and among those who recite and those who listen, the desire to recite and listen further is increased. However, it is necessary to avoid affectation in this matter.
It is understood that when reciting the Noble Qur’an, one should make an effort to use a specific melodious voice, but in this matter, the accent of the Arabs should be kept in view, as the Imams of the Haram in Makkah recite. One should avoid excessive affectation, as is the style of recitation of the Egyptian reciters nowadays.
