It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Ubada bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to be engaged in (the welfare of) the Muslims. Whenever someone migrated and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) would join him with one of us so that he could teach him the Holy Qur’an. Sayyiduna ‘Ubada (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entrusted a man to me; he used to stay at my house, I would give him the same food that my family ate, and I would teach him the Holy Qur’an. When he returned to his home and thought that I had a right over him, he gave me a bow as a gift. I had never seen a bow made of such fine wood and craftsmanship. So I went to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! What is your opinion about this? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is a burning ember of fire that you have hung between your shoulders.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The wording of one narration of this blessed hadith is as follows: It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Ubada ibn al-Samit radi Allahu anhu, who says: “I taught some people from among the Ahl al-Suffah writing and the Qur’an. One of them gifted me a bow, which was not wealth for me, and I use it to shoot (arrows) in the path of Allah, the Blessed and Exalted. So I asked the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and he said: ‘If it pleases you to have it made into a collar of fire around your neck, then accept it.’” … I taught some people from among the Ahl al-Suffah writing and the Noble Qur’an. One of them gave me a bow as a gift. I said: This is not wealth for me (rather, it is a weapon useful in jihad); I will use it to shoot arrows in the path of Allah, so I accepted it. But when I asked you, O Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, you said: If it pleases you that, because of this, a collar of fire be placed around your neck, then accept it. (Musnad Ahmad: 22689)
