Hadith 8287

(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا جَاءَ الْبَابَ يَسْتَأْذِنُ لَمْ يَسْتَقْبِلْهُ يَقُولُ يَمْشِي مَعَ الْحَائِطِ حَتَّى يَسْتَأْذِنَ فَيُؤْذَنَ لَهُ أَوْ يَنْصَرِفَ
(Second chain) When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the door of someone's house to seek permission, he would not stand facing the door; rather, he would walk along the wall until he had sought permission or else he would return.

Benefits: … It is understood that the one seeking permission or knocking should not stand directly in front of the door, so that there is no exposure of privacy, no secret is revealed, and no embarrassment occurs.
