Hadith 8275

(وَعَنْهُ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا تَبْدَءُوا الْيَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَى بِالسَّلَامِ وَإِذَا لَقِيتُمُوهُمْ فِي طَرِيقٍ فَاضْطَرُّوهُمْ إِلَى أَضْيَقِهَا
(Second chain) The Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Do not initiate greeting the Jews and Christians with salam, and when you meet them on the road, force them to the narrowest part of the path.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: ... Forcing [the non-Muslim] towards the narrowest part of the path is not intended as an insult to the non-Muslim; rather, the purpose is that Muslims should walk in the middle of the road so that the virtue of Islam and the Muslim becomes manifest. When Islam was practically regarded as the most favored religion on earth, acting upon these ahadith appeared beautiful, because through these actions the dignity and grandeur of Islam were established. And at this time, since Muslims are not proving themselves to be people of dignity, Islam is not being regarded as possessing that rank.
