It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I went to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was urinating. I said: "Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah!" but he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply. I said again: "Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah!" but he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply. I said again: "Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah!" but he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) walked away, and I followed behind him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) entered his house, and I entered the mosque and sat there in sadness. Meanwhile, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me after he (peace and blessings be upon him) had purified himself. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) replied to all three greetings, saying: "Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah," "Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah," and "Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abdullah! Shall I tell you the best Surah of the Holy Qur'an?" I said: "Yes, of course, do tell me, O Messenger of Allah!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Recite 'All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds' until you complete it."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Ablution (wudu) was not obligatory for replying to salam; however, it is certainly recommended (mustahabb) that one should observe ablution for the remembrance (dhikr) of Allah Ta’ala. Salam is also a form of the remembrance of Allah Ta’ala.
