Humaid says that it was asked from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) whether the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to dye his hair. He said: In the beginning of his blessed beard, not more than seventeen or twenty white hairs could be seen; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained free from the defect of old age’s white hair. Someone asked Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) whether white hair of old age is a defect. He said: You simply do not like it, however, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) used to dye his hair with henna and katam, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to dye his hair with henna.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … White hair is a light and dignity for a Muslim. The meaning of it being a defect is either that most people desire that their hair remain black and not turn white, or that the whiteness of white hair remaining as it is, is a defect—that is, its whiteness should be changed through henna and the like, so that there is opposition to the Jews and Christians. As when the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam saw the father of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu, Sayyiduna Abu Quhafa radi Allahu anhu, whose hair was as white as the thaghamah plant, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said that this whiteness should be changed.
