Humaid says that it was asked from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) whether the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to dye his hair. He said: In the beginning of his blessed beard, not more than seventeen or twenty white hairs could be seen; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained free from the defect of old age’s white hair. Someone asked Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) whether white hair of old age is a defect. He said: You simply do not like it, however, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) used to dye his hair with henna and katam, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to dye his hair with henna.
