Saeed bin Musayyib narrates that Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with them both) once said: "You have invented a bad habit, whereas the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade lying." A man brought a stick, and at its end a piece of cloth was hanging. He said: "Beware! This itself is a lie." Qatadah said: "By this is meant those pieces of cloth with which women make more of their hair visible."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is prohibited for a woman to add or mix anything into her hair with the intention that her hair appears more than it actually is; this would be a lie and contrary to natural disposition. However, it is permissible to use a braid (paranda) or similar item to keep the hair under control, whether it is small or large, but the condition is that the woman's intention should be to keep her hair managed, or her purpose is adornment. It is essential that even in this, there should be no fabrication or deception involved.
