عَنْ قَتَادَةَ مِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَالِثٍ عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ قَالَ جَاءَنَا كِتَابُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَنَحْنُ بِآذَرْبَيْجَانَ يَا عُتْبَةَ بْنَ فَرْقَدٍ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالتَّنَعُّمَ وَزِيَّ أَهْلِ الشِّرْكِ وَلُبْسَ الْحَرِيرِ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَانَا عَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ وَقَالَ إِلَّا هَكَذَا وَرَفَعَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِصْبَعَيْهِ
(Third chain) Abu Uthman says: We received a letter from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) while we were in Azerbaijan. It was written in it: O Utbah bin Farqad! Beware of luxury, adopting the appearance of the polytheists, and wearing silk garments, because the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from wearing silk, except for this much—at the same time, he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his two fingers to clarify.
