Saeed bin Jubair says: I was passing through a road in Madinah with Sayyiduna Ibn Umar and Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them). Some youths had tied up a chicken and were shooting arrows at it, and they had to give every arrow that missed the target to the owner of the chicken. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry upon seeing this scene and said: Who has done this? So they scattered. Then he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has cursed the person who mutilates an animal.
