Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: My Lord came to me in my dream in a most beautiful form—I think it was an incident of sleep—and Allah Almighty said: O Muhammad! Do you know what the exalted angels are disputing about? I said: No. Then Allah Almighty placed His hand between my shoulders, on my back, until I felt its coolness in my chest. I was granted knowledge of everything between the earth and the heavens. Then Allah Almighty said: O Muhammad! Do you know what the exalted angels are disputing about? I said: Yes, they are disputing about the expiations and the ranks. Allah Almighty said: What are the expiations and the ranks? I said: The expiations are: staying in the mosques, walking on foot to the congregational prayers, and completing the ablution despite difficulty. Whoever performs these deeds, he lives in goodness and dies in goodness, and he becomes purified from his sins as if his mother gave birth to him today. Then Allah Almighty said: And O Muhammad! When you finish the prayer, recite this supplication: "Allahumma inni as'aluka al-khayrat wa tark al-munkarat wa hubb al-masakin wa idha aradta bi 'ibadika fitnatan an taqbidani ilayka ghayra maftunin" (O Allah! I ask You for doing good deeds, abandoning evil deeds, and love for the poor, and when You intend a trial for Your servants, then take me to Yourself without being afflicted by it). And the ranks are: feeding others, greeting with peace, and praying at night when people are asleep.
