Hadith 7842

Abu Israil Jashmi narrates from an elder of his tribe named Ja'dah that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saw a man in a dream. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sent a message to him. When he came, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, described the dream to him. That man had a large belly. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, placed his finger on his belly and said: If this largeness had been in something other than his belly, it would have been better for him.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of the last sentence of this hadith is that if this greatness were present in other limbs instead of the belly, such as the arms or the head, or if instead of the belly being large, his intelligence and intellect were greater, then that would have been better. There is no virtue in having a large belly; rather, it is something blameworthy. It becomes the cause of many illnesses and brings about laziness and sluggishness in one's disposition.
