Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunaif (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we passed by a water pond, I entered it and bathed with that water. When I came out, I was feverish. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to know of this, he said: Tell Abu Thabit Sahl bin Hunaif to seek refuge with Allah Almighty. I said: O my master! Is it permissible to perform ruqyah (spiritual healing)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Ruqyah should only be done when afflicted by the evil eye or bitten by a poisonous thing.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The purpose of this blessed hadith is not that incantation (ruqyah) is restricted to only these three cases; rather, its meaning is that for these ailments, incantation holds greater significance, because their affliction is very severe. Apart from these, performing incantation for other illnesses is also established from the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
