Abu Suwaid Abdi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: We went to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and sat at his door waiting for permission. When we saw that there was a long delay in granting us permission, I got up and moved towards a hole in the door and started peeking inside. He understood and gave us permission, and we went in and sat with him. He said: "Who among you was just now peeking into my house?" I said: "It was me." He said: "By what evidence did you consider it permissible to peek into my house?" I said: "You delayed in granting us permission, so I looked; I did not do it intentionally." Then we began to ask Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) questions. He said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Islam is built upon five things: bearing witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, giving zakat, performing Hajj to the House of Allah, and fasting in Ramadan." I said: "O Abu Abdur Rahman! What do you say about jihad?" He said: "Whoever performs jihad, does so for himself."
