It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) that he complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that during prayer he experiences something (which breaks wudu) and he begins to think that something has actually happened. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: In such a situation, he should not leave the prayer until he perceives a smell or hears a sound.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: ... In matters of purification (taharah), whispers (waswasah) and doubts and suspicions tend to dominate those people who become heedless of the rulings presented in the aforementioned ahadith. Every person knows that the exit of wind is not limited only to that orifice and its surrounding area from which gas is expelled; rather, a person’s being and nature are already made aware and fully conscious of what has happened and what is about to happen. Therefore, if a person feels any movement or a puff of air between his buttocks, this does not mean that wind has necessarily exited. If Shaytan tries to cast him into such a doubt, he should set the condition for himself that he will only consider it if he hears a sound or perceives an odor; otherwise, he should regard his sensation as a result of Shaytanic whisperings and dismiss it.
Those who suffer from the disease of waswasah regarding ritual bath (ghusl), istinja (cleansing after relieving oneself), drops of urine, and ablution (wudu), are advised to adhere to the Shari‘ah and, by reflecting on the above ahadith, not allow Shaytan to gain dominance over them. This humble servant possesses the ability to treat people afflicted with doubts and waswasah, so as long as I am alive, such people may contact me. In fact, every person should acquire this skill.
