عَنْ أَبِي جَمْرَةَ قَالَ كُنْتُ أَدْفَعُ النَّاسَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا فَاحْتَبَسْتُ أَيَّامًا فَقَالَ مَا حَبَسَكَ قُلْتُ الْحُمَّى قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّ الْحُمَّى مِنْ فَيْحِ جَهَنَّمَ فَأَبْرِدُوهَا بِمَاءِ زَمْزَمَ
Abu Hamzah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: I used to keep people away from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). Once, I could not go for a few days. Later, when I went, he said: What kept you from coming to me? I said: I was afflicted with fever. He said: Indeed, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Fever is from the steam of Hellfire, so cool it with the water of Zamzam.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The water of Zamzam is blessed, therefore performing ritual bath (ghusl) with it will be more beneficial. However, it is also possible that the intent of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was that the water of Zamzam should be drunk, as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “The water of Zamzam is for whatever purpose it is drunk for.” … The water of Zamzam will serve the purpose for which it is drunk. (Ibn Majah: 3062)
