Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you release your dog for hunting and it eats from the catch, then do not eat that game, because it means the dog has kept it for itself. And when you release your dog and it does not eat from it, then eat it, because it has kept the game for its owner.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From these two hadiths it is understood that it is permissible to eat the game only when the hunting dog hunts and does not eat anything from it itself, rather, it restrains and keeps it for the owner. Also, the statement of Allah the Exalted is: {فَکُلُوْامِمَّااَمْسَکْنَعَلَیْکُمْ} … So eat from what they (the hunting animals) catch for you and hold back for you. When the dog itself begins to eat, it means that it did not restrain the game for the owner.
