Hadith 7577

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wa’il Hadhrami (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man named Suwaid bin Tariq asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about wine. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade him from drinking it. He said: I make wine for medicinal purposes. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, it is a disease and not a cure.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Imam Nawawi said: This hadith explicitly states that alcohol is not a remedy, therefore it is not permissible to use it for treatment. According to our companions, the predominant opinion is that using it for treatment is forbidden, and drinking it to quench thirst is also forbidden. However, if a morsel gets stuck in the throat and there is nothing available except alcohol to dislodge it, then it becomes necessary to use alcohol.
