(Second chain) He says: The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, granted a concession of three days for the traveler and one day and night for the resident. By Allah! If the questioner had asked further, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would have granted a concession of five days.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From these two narrations, it cannot be clearly established that a traveler is permitted to wipe (masah) over the footwear for more than three days. However, the following narration on this subject is noteworthy: It is narrated from ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir al-Juhani radi Allahu anhu, he says: “I departed from al-Sham towards Madinah on the day of Jumu‘ah. When I arrived there, I went to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab radi Allahu anhu. He asked: ‘When did you put your khuffayn (leather socks) on your feet?’ I replied: ‘On the day of Jumu‘ah.’ He asked: ‘Did you remove them afterwards?’ I said: ‘No.’ He said: ‘You have acted in accordance with the Sunnah.’” (Sharh Ma‘ani al-Athar: 1/48, Dar Qutni: p. 72, Hakim: 1/180–181, Sahihah: 2622)
When a Companion refers to an action or statement as Sunnah, what is meant is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. This hadith appears to be in conflict with the ahadith of the previous chapter, because in those, a traveler is permitted to wipe for three days, while in this one, permission is given for seven days. Reconciliation and harmonization between these two ahadith is possible in such a way that the narration mentioning seven days is understood to refer to a situation of necessity and being in the company of a group, due to which it was not possible to remove the footwear. This is also the view of Shaykh al-Islam Imam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah.
