Hadith 745

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the occasion of the Battle of Tabuk commanded that a traveler may wipe over the leather socks for three days and nights, and a resident for one day and one night.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From these narrations, it is understood that a resident may wipe over the socks (masah) for one day, that is, twenty-four hours, and a traveler for three days. Further clarification will be provided in the next chapter. Keep in mind that the duration for wiping does not begin from the time the socks are worn, but rather from the time the ablution (wudu) is broken. Its explanation is as follows: if a person performed ablution at the time of Dhuhr and then put on the socks, but his ablution breaks at the time of Asr, then the period for wiping will begin from Asr.
