Hadith 7449

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that I was on the right side of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) was on the left side. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank water and said to me: "It is your turn to drink the water, but if you wish, I can give it to Khalid first?" I said: "I cannot give preference to anyone over the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." So he handed the vessel to me.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Reflect that on the right side of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu, and on the left was Sayyiduna Khalid ibn Walid radi Allahu anhu. The natural inclination of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was to offer the drink first to Khalid ibn Walid, but since he was seated on the left, permission was sought from Ibn Abbas. When he did not grant permission, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gave precedence to the legal (shar‘i) ruling and handed the drink to Abdullah ibn Abbas. From this hadith, it is understood that not only is it necessary for the distributor to give precedence to the right side, but it is also the right of those seated on the right.
