Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, I was ten years old, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, I was twenty years old. My mother and my maternal aunts used to encourage me to serve him. One day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to our house. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) entered, we milked our domesticated goat for him and the household mixed water from the well into it. A Bedouin was on his right side, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was on his left side, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was in a corner. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank that milk. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Give the remaining milk to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), but he (peace and blessings be upon him) handed it to the Bedouin and said: Those on the right are given precedence.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … When giving something to others, preference should be given to those on the right side. However, if a person wishes to serve those on the left side first, he should seek permission from those on the right. As Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d radi Allahu anhu narrates that a drink was brought to the service of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam drank from it, and on his right side a boy was sitting, while on his left were elderly men. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said to the boy: “Will you permit me to give these elders before you?” The boy replied: “By Allah, O Messenger of Allah! In regard to my share of what comes from you, I will not give preference to anyone.” The narrator stated that upon this, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam handed the cup to the boy.
