It is narrated from Bahisa, she says: My father sought permission from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to come to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted permission. He came close to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and clung to him. Then he said: O Messenger of Allah! What is that thing which it is not permissible to withhold? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Water. Then he said: O Messenger of Allah! What is that thing which it is not lawful to withhold? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Salt. Then he said: O Messenger of Allah! What is that thing which it is not lawful to withhold? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is better for you that you do a good deed. Thus, the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained limited to water and salt, but after that, that man never refused to give anything, even if it was something very small.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … If this water or other such items are according to one’s need, then there is no harm in withholding them. However, if they are in excess of one’s need, then it is prohibited to withhold them; they should be given to the one in need. By doing so, a great reward is attained. Furthermore, fulfilling the need of any needy person to the best of one’s ability is goodness, and one should strive as much as possible in doing good.
