Hadith 7326

It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I said, “O Messenger of Allah! My father Hatim Tai used to maintain ties of kinship and did many good deeds?” But you (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, your father attained what he intended by his actions.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant fame and show. I said: “Alright, I ask you about such food which I leave only due to doubt and hesitation?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Then do not leave such a thing in which there is resemblance to Christianity.”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Hatim was a Christian by religion and passed away during the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah). He was unparalleled in generosity and munificence. The meaning of this hadith is that the purpose of his generosity and other good qualities was to attain fame and praise, not to seek the pleasure of Allah, and that is what happened. Hafiz Ibn Kathir said in his history: Hatim was a generous man, and in the era of Jahiliyyah he was greatly praised. His son attained Islam. Hatim possessed astonishing acts and remarkable stories regarding his generosity, but his purpose was the pursuit of fame and showing off, not Allah the Exalted and the Hereafter.
