Hadith 7321

It is narrated from Yazid, he says: I stayed with Sayyida Umm Ayyub Ansariyyah, may Allah be pleased with her, in whose house the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stayed at the time of migration. She related to me that people gave the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, food that was distressing, in which there were these vegetables—onion and garlic as well. But he, peace and blessings be upon him, did not like this food and said to his companions: You eat it, I am not like you. I fear that I might cause discomfort to my angelic companion.

Hadith Takhrij «
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Whoever eats garlic or onion, let him keep away from our mosque and sit in his house.” (Bukhari, Muslim) … In light of this hadith, the meaning of the aforementioned hadith will be explained as follows: The time to go to the mosque was so distant that by then the smell of garlic would have disappeared from the mouths of the noble Companions. However, even then, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not consider it appropriate to eat such things and also explained the reason. If the time to go to the mosque is near, then eating such things is prohibited. In reality, it was cooked garlic, the eating of which is not objectionable, but since an angel used to come to you, you would avoid even cooked garlic.
