Hadith 7284

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when this verse was revealed: {وَلِلّٰہِ عَلَی النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَیْتِ مَنِ اسْتطَاعَ إِلَیْہِ سَبِیْلًا} (Surah Aal-e-Imran: 97), meaning: Whoever has the ability to reach the House of Allah, Hajj to the House of Allah is obligatory upon him. The companions submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Is Hajj obligatory every year? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. They asked again: Is it obligatory every year? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. They asked a third time: Is this act of worship obligatory every year? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, and if I had said yes, then Hajj would have become obligatory upon you every year. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: {یَا أَیُّہَا الَّذِیْنَ آمَنُوْا لَا تَسْأَلُوْا عَنْ أَشْیَائَ إِنْ تُبْدَ لَکُمْ تَسُؤْکُمْ} (Surah Al-Ma'idah: 101), meaning: O you who believe! Do not ask about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This is an established principle of Islamic jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh) that an absolute command from Allah Ta'ala or His Messenger does not indicate repetition of the act commanded; that is, when a ruling is given in the Shari'ah without any restriction, and a person acts upon it once, he is absolved of responsibility for that command, and he will not be required to fulfill it again. This very example is found in this blessed hadith: Allah Ta'ala has made Hajj obligatory in absolute terms, and the implication of this absoluteness is that when a person performs Hajj once, he is absolved of responsibility. However, when the Companions did not suffice with this principle and began to ask further questions regarding additional restrictions, this was displeasing to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and Allah Ta'ala forbade such types of questions. For the obligation of Hajj, see hadith number (4064).
