Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We left Makkah, and the daughter of Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) started following us and called out: My uncle! My uncle! So I took her hand and entrusted her to Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), saying: She is your uncle’s daughter, keep her in your care. When we reached Madinah, Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), Ja’far (may Allah be pleased with him), and I all began to dispute about her. I said: I brought her, and she is my uncle’s daughter. Zayd said: She is my brother’s daughter, and Ja’far said: She is my uncle’s daughter, and her maternal aunt is my wife. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (in making the decision) said to Ja’far: You resemble me in appearance and character. He said to Zayd: You are our brother and friend. And to me (Ali), he said: You are from me and I am from you. Do this: entrust the girl to her maternal aunt, for the maternal aunt is like the mother. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Why do you not marry her? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: She is my foster niece.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: From this hadith, it is understood that after the mother, the maternal aunt is most deserving regarding the child, as the commentator of Abu Dawood, Allamah Azimabadi rahimahullah, has said: From this hadith, it is understood that in the matter of the upbringing of a boy or girl, the maternal aunt is in the place of the mother. There is consensus (ijma‘) on the fact that in this matter, the mother is the most deserving, and from the analogy given in this hadith, it is understood that the maternal aunt is more deserving than the father, grandmothers, and paternal aunts of the child.
