Hadith 7263

وَمِنْ طَرِيقٍ ثَانٍ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَيْضًا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ رَجُلٌ شَحِيحٌ وَلَيْسَ يُعْطِينِي وَوَلَدِي مَا يَكْفِينِي إِلَّا مَا أَخَذْتُ مِنْ مَالِهِ وَهُوَ لَا يَعْلَمُ قَالَ خُذِي مَا يَكْفِيكِ وَوَلَدَكِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
(Narration through another chain) It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that Hind bint Utbah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah! My husband Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) is a miserly man, he does not give me enough expenses that would suffice for me and my children, and I manage by taking some of his wealth without informing him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You may take, in a good manner, what is sufficient for you and your children.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is extremely necessary for such a woman to exercise caution that whatever expenditure she takes should be according to custom (‘urf) and the standards of a moderate society. For example, how do people of her husband’s status eat and drink, dress, educate their children, etc.? If she takes more than what is customary, she will be considered treacherous. It is better that such a woman consults with an intelligent and trustworthy person.
