Hadith 7209

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the husband and wife who performed li'an: "Your matter is referred to Allah Almighty; one of you is surely lying." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the husband: "You no longer have any authority over this woman." The man said: "O Messenger of Allah! What will happen to the dowry I have given?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you are truthful against this woman, then the dowry will be in exchange for the fact that you considered her private parts lawful for you. And if you have made a false accusation, then she is very far from you."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: Li'an is not a divorce (talaq), rather it is such an annulment (fasakh) of marriage that after it, there remains no possibility of reconciliation (ruju') between the husband and wife, as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "Al-mulā‘inān idhā tafarraqā lā yajtami‘ān abadan." ... When the couple who have performed li'an separate, they can never be joined (in marriage) again. This hadith is narrated from Abdullah ibn Umar, Sahl ibn Sa'd, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, and Ali ibn Abu Talib (radi Allahu anhum).
