Hadith 72

It is narrated from Rabi’ bin Hirash, may Allah have mercy on him, that a man from Banu ‘Amir sought permission to enter upon the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: “May I come in?” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to his servant: “This man did not seek permission in a good manner, so go to him and tell him to say: As-salamu ‘alaykum, may I come in?” The man himself heard these words of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said: “As-salamu ‘alaykum, may I come in?” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, granted him permission. He said: “So I entered and said to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: What have you brought to us?” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Indeed, I have brought goodness. The details are that I have come to you so that you may worship Allah, the One and Only, Who has no partner, and that you abandon Lat and ‘Uzza, and that you perform five prayers in the day and night, fast one month in the year, perform Hajj to the House of Allah, and take zakat from your wealthy and distribute it among your poor.” The man said: “Is there any type of deed that you do not know?” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Allah Almighty has taught me goodness, but there are some forms of knowledge that only Allah Almighty knows, as Allah Almighty has said: «إِنَّ اللَّهَ عِنْدَهُ عِلْمُ السَّاعَةِ وَيُنَزِّلُ الْغَيْثَ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِي الْأَرْحَامِ وَمَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ مَاذَا تَكْسِبُ غَدًا وَمَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ بِأَيِّ أَرْضٍ تَمُوتُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ» (Indeed, with Allah alone is knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, and He knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in which land it will die. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.) (Surah Luqman: 34)”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The blessed hadith is clear in its meaning. The manner of seeking permission that has been described at the beginning is neglected by both the common people and the elite. Some people have been observed to give a slight knock at the door, then open it themselves and enter inside; this is their self-invented manner, not a requirement of the Shari‘ah. Similarly, from the last part it is understood that the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was not ‘Alim al-Ghayb (knower of the unseen); he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) only had knowledge of that which was taught to him through revelation.
