Hadith 7196

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: We were sitting in the Prophet’s Mosque on a Friday evening when a man from among the Ansar said: Tell me, if one of us sees a man with his wife, now if he kills him, you will kill him; if he speaks about it, you will impose the punishment for slander upon him; and if he remains silent, then great anger will be suppressed within his silence. By Allah! If I remain safe until morning, I will surely ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this matter. So he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked: O Messenger of Allah! If one of us sees a man with his wife, now if he kills him, you will kill him; if he speaks about it, you will impose the punishment for slander upon him; and if he remains silent, then anger will be suppressed beneath his silence. O my Allah! Decide this matter. Then the verses of Li’an were revealed. Sayyiduna Abdullah says: The first person to be tested by Li’an was that very man who had asked this question; it began with him.
