It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) separated himself from his wives for a month, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) took up residence in an upper room, while his pure wives were below. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) came down to his wives after twenty-nine days, a man said: O Messenger of Allah! You stayed for twenty-nine days (whereas the oath was for a month)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: A month is like this, and like this, and like this. And on the third time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) folded his thumb.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … If a husband swears an oath not to approach his wife for more than four months, or swears such an oath without specifying a duration, then after four months have passed, the husband must either re-establish relations with his wife or divorce her. Divorce does not occur automatically upon the completion of four months. If he does not make a decision himself, the court will compel him to choose one of the two options. It should be remembered that if a husband swears an oath for a specified period, but re-establishes relations with his wife before the completion of that period, then he will have to pay the expiation (kaffarah) for breaking his oath.
