It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left his wives for a month. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting on a mat in an upper room, and the marks of the mat were visible on his blessed back. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! The kings of Persia drink from vessels of gold and silver, and you (peace and blessings be upon him) are in such poverty and hardship. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Their good deeds are being given to them in this world. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The month is of twenty-nine days, like this, like this, and like this. On the third time, he (peace and blessings be upon him) folded his thumb.
