It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade a traveler from coming to his family after the ‘Isha prayer.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This ruling pertains to the traveler who remains away from home for a long period, as narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “When one of you has been away for a long time, he should not enter upon his family at night.” (Sahih Bukhari: 3843, Sahih Muslim: 3558)

It is desired in the Shari‘ah that the relationship between husband and wife be pleasant and harmonious. To achieve this objective, the Shari‘ah has instructed the woman to adorn and beautify herself for her husband. The purpose of this hadith is to eliminate those causes which may lead to aversion or suspicion.

Sayyiduna Jabir radi Allahu anhu narrates that when we returned to Madinah from a military expedition and were about to go to our homes, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Wait a little, so that your wives may comb their disheveled hair and remove excess hair.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

In this hadith, encouragement is given to foster affection and love between husband and wife. It is noteworthy that no characteristic or matter of the husband and wife remains hidden from each other, yet despite this, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade coming at night so that no situation of aversion might arise. It is possible that the wife may not be in a good state, or there may be someone in the house whose presence is unpleasant to the husband. However, this does not prove that such a person would necessarily be bad, but in this matter, the husband’s preferences are to be considered.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah radi Allahu anhu narrates: I went to my wife’s house at night and saw that a woman was combing her hair. I thought it was a man, so I pointed my sword towards her, but then it became clear that she was a woman. When this incident was related to the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he forbade men from coming to their wives at night. (Sahih Abi Awanah, referenced in Fath al-Bari: 9/426)

If all the ahadith of this chapter and their objectives are studied, it becomes clear that in today’s era, one may come at night after informing (the family) by phone. However, in this regard, it is necessary for the woman to understand her husband’s temperament.

Nowadays, wives are content with simple clothing at home and do not pay much attention to cleanliness, but when they go to visit other relatives or attend gatherings outside the home, the styles of beauty and adornment they adopt would put even a bride to shame. Such behavior is not the intent of the Shari‘ah.
