عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَمْعَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَذْكُرُ النِّسَاءَ فَوَعَظَ فِيهِنَّ وَقَالَ عَلَامَ يَضْرِبُ وَفِي لَفْظٍ يَجْلِدُ أَحَدُكُمُ امْرَأَتَهُ زَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ ضَرْبَ الْعَبْدِ وَلَعَلَّهُ أَنْ يُضَاجِعَهَا مِنْ آخِرِ النَّهَارِ أَوْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zam’ah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advising men regarding the rights of women. In the midst of this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Why does one of you beat his wife as he beats a slave, then perhaps at the end of the day or the end of the night he will have to be intimate with her.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: ... There should not be such an extreme and immoderate approach that first the wife is severely beaten, and then at night one has intercourse with her. If, due to some wrongdoing, it becomes necessary to punish the wife, then such a mild method should be adopted that there is no cause for astonishment at the time of intercourse later.
