Abu Balj says: I said to Muhammad bin Hatib Jumahi: I have married two women and no duff was played for me. He said: You have done wrong. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The distinction between halal and haram is the sound, that is, playing the duff. In another narration it is: The thing that distinguishes between halal and haram is playing the duff and making sound.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In our Shari‘ah, at the time of marriage, after the consent of the guardian (wali), the groom, and the bride, the condition of at least two witnesses has been stipulated. As for what the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is mentioning in this hadith, these are matters of recommendation (istihbab), meaning it is better that, on the occasion of marriage, there should be some festivity, the duff (hand drum) should be played, and permissible songs and words may be recited, so that the news of the marriage reaches far and wide and people may also rejoice.
