Hadith 7046

It is narrated from Abu Ghadiyah Yamani, he says: I came to Madinah, the messenger of Kathir bin Salt came and invited the people of the mosque, only Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) and five more men stood up, I was one of them, so these people went and ate food. When Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) returned, he washed his hands and said: By Allah! O people of the mosque! Indeed, you are disobedient to Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Accepting a Muslim’s invitation is a right, especially the invitation to a wedding feast (walimah), therefore this right should be fulfilled with care; otherwise, it would be disobedience to the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

From some ahadith it is understood that one should not accept an invitation due to an optional (nafl) fast, but it is also permissible to break an optional fast because of an invitation. As Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id Khudri radi Allahu anhu narrates: I prepared food for the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. When the food was placed (on the tablecloth), a man said: “I am fasting.” Upon this, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Your brother invited you and made an effort for you, so break your fast and, if you wish, fast another day in its place.” (Sunan Bayhaqi; al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said: Its chain is hasan [good].)

If it is truly apparent that the host has prepared the food with great effort and eagerness, then one should break the optional fast; and if reward is still desired, then one may fast again another day.
