عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ كُنَّا نَتَمَتَّعُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ حَتَّى نَهَانَا عُمَرُ أَخِيرًا يَعْنِي النِّسَاءَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), he says: In the blessed era of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and during the times of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), we used to contract temporary marriage (mut‘ah) with women. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) later forbade us from it.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Imam Nawawi said: The meaning of this hadith is that those Companions who contracted temporary marriage (nikah mut‘ah) during the caliphates of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhuma), they were not aware of the abrogating evidence. Eventually, Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhu) also forbade them from it.
