Narrated by Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me while a man was sitting with me. The face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) changed, as if he found this matter very unpleasant. I said: O Messenger of Allah! This is my foster brother. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Consider carefully who your brothers are; fosterage is established only by hunger (i.e., breastfeeding in infancy).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of the last sentence of the hadith is that when a child is so young that its nourishment can only be milk, then breastfeeding at this age establishes the relationship of suckling (rada‘ah). And the period of suckling (rada‘ah) is two years, as is stated by Allah the Exalted: {وَالْوَالِدٰتُیُرْضِعْنَاَوْلَادَھُنَّحَوْلَیْنِکَامِلَیْنِلِمَنْاَرَادَاَنْیُّتِمَّالرَّضَاعَۃَ} … “And mothers shall breastfeed their children for two complete years, for those who wish to complete the term of suckling.” (Surah al-Baqarah: 233) The maximum period of suckling (rada‘ah) is two years.
